Whitakers Furniture was started by my grandfather James D Whitaker in the late 1950s in North Platte, Nebraska. After working in the funeral and furniture industry in North Platte he got courageous and opened Whitakers in North Platte.

In 1959 Bill Whitaker came and worked with his parents James and Kathleen at the store in North Platte. Bill’s brother, Jim, came back in the 1960s after graduating law school and joined the family business.

In 1966 the (trio) father and sons opened Whitakers of McCook together. In 1967 Bill Whitaker bought out his dad and brothers shares and solely owned Whitakers of McCook!

In 1981 Jeff and Mark Whitaker (2 of Bill Whitakers 3 children) came to McCook and worked with their father in the furniture business, together the 3 of them built a furniture and flooring store in McCook, NE that is known for great products and even better customer service. Bill laid the foundation and set a high standard for quality products and an excellent work ethic. Bill came to work almost every day until his health declined and he was no longer able to make daily visits to Whitakers in late 2020. Mark and Jeff took over all of the daily operations and continued after Bill passed away June 13, 2021, Mark Whitaker retired July 1, 2021.

Jeff wanted to continue to work and did not want to close the business, so a friend of Whitakers, Terri Gray bought out Mark’s portion of the business and became partners with Jeff Whitaker. Jeff and Terri work to make Whitakers better each day! Whitakers has an awesome team who worked through a remodel while remaining open and continue to make Whitakers a friendly place of business that customers love to come to and shop!
